Invisalign Q & A

What is Invisalign?

Invisalign is an orthodontic treatment system that helps straighten your teeth and jaw. It uses removable plastic aligners to apply pressure to your teeth, unlike traditional braces that use metal brackets and wires.

Invisalign aligners are clear and fit snugly over your teeth. They aren’t very noticeable, so you can continue speaking and smiling confidently.

What types of alignment problems can Invisalign treat?

At J Park Dental, Dr. Park uses Invisalign to treat various alignment problems, including:

  • Crooked teeth

  • Crowding

  • Overlapping teeth

  • Spaces between teeth

Invisalign can also treat bite problems, such as crossbite, overbite, and underbite.

What does Invisalign treatment involve?

At J Park Dental, Invisalign treatment begins with a review of your dental records and discussing what you like and dislike about your smile. Next, Dr. Park completes an oral exam and takes digital X-rays, assessing the alignment of your teeth and jaw.

If Dr. Park determines you can benefit from Invisalign, she takes digital scans of your mouth. Dr. Park then uploads your scans to a computer program and develops a custom orthodontic treatment plan, mapping out the exact movements of your teeth and jaw.

After finalizing your treatment plan, Dr. Park sends it to an Invisalign lab. Technicians at the lab manufacture a series of custom Invisalign aligners.

Throughout treatment, you visit J Park Dental regularly. Dr. Park provides a new set of aligners at each checkup that places slightly different pressure on your teeth and jaw. Over time, that pressure gradually changes their position, helping you achieve a more balanced and symmetrical smile.

How long does Invisalign treatment take?

The time that Invisalign treatment takes depends on various factors, including the alignment problems addressed and your commitment to Dr. Park’s plan. Most people finish treatment within 12-18 months* but it may take 24 months or longer. To speed up the process, wear your aligners for 20-22 hours every day, only removing them to brush, floss, or eat.

Are Invisalign aligners uncomfortable?

Invisalign aligners take a little bit of getting used to, but they aren’t uncomfortable. You may initially experience some mild soreness or gum sensitivity, but any discomfort should resolve within a day or two.
